Portfolio review

One of the most important pillars of learning anything in life is true and sincere feedback. Sooner or later, if you really want to grow as a photographer, you will need to develop a very critical eye for your own work. Better still, you will need to look for the constructive criticism of relevant individuals. It should be constructive, because there is nothing worse than being demolished with poor arguments which focus on killing your confidence, so important when we begin any creative endeavour. It should, however, be "criticism", since no pleasant soft lies coming from your family and friends will ever make a difference to your photography. And it should come from a relevant individual, someone who has something to say, someone whose work you like, someone who becomes a source of inspiration for your own work and someone you can trust.

We believe that there are no bad or good photographs, just meaningful or meaningless photographs. With our students, we do not try to impose our way of seeing the world which would be opposite to that practised by a good teacher. Each of us is unique and sees the world in a very personal way. What we intend is to help you find your ‘inner' you. As Khalik Gibran said, "The teacher who is indeed wise does not bid you to enter the house of his wisdom but rather leads you to the threshold of your mind".

Following many requests, we are very glad to offer Portfolio Reviews from Rafael Rojas. These portfolio reviews will cater for photographers of all levels, shooting film or digital, in the fields of fine art, nature and landscape photography who wish to further develop their photography and creative expression.

Our students are asked to send us a selection of 10 photographs they would like reviewed, which are fairly representative of the entire body of work of the photographer. These photographs, ideally, should depict the personal style and vision of the photographer. After receipt of the photographs, Rafael will create a 1.5 hour video with screen-sharing where he will give you his true and constructive feedback about your work, dealing with aspects like the general vision or personal style perceived in the photographer, the use of light, composition, technical aspects, existence of common patterns in the photographs which unveil a certain personal way of seeing the world, post-processing, etc. The video will also focus on recommendations for the student to take his work to the next level and end with some conclusions. During these videos, Rafael may make use of Photoshop, Lightroom or Nik Silver Efex, in order to provide suggestions, offer compositional ideas or simply to illustrate some of the points discussed.

A few days after you have watched the video, Rafael Rojas will discuss any doubts or questions you might have during 30 minutes via Skype. It will also be a great opportunity to discuss one-to-one with Rafael Rojas about your work.

As these portfolio reviews are totally personal, they can be in English, French or Spanish. Just ensure you choose your preferred language at the booking form when registering for a portfolio review.

Are portfolio reviews open for photographers of all levels?
Yes. A good portfolio review can make a difference for photographers who are beginning and help them avoid quite a number of common pitfalls, but can also be extremely useful to quite advanced photographers who have reached a certain threshold, feel stuck in the creative journey and who intend to push their photography to a new level.

I am a little nervous...my photographs are not good enough!
All photographs are good when someone took them for a reason. Our critiques are not conceived to demolish your confidence, but to help you improve your photography. Of course we will be critical, but the only aim is to focus on your strengths and provide you with advice to overcome your weaknesses. If you are considering submitting your work to us for a review that is a good sign that you really want to improve as a photographer. If you feel you do not like your work anymore and have no idea how to grow as a photographer, be glad as these crises are a blessing for all creative people! That will certainly imply that new doors await their opening for your photography! We can help you open them.

Can you make the critique review in any language?
Rafael will provide your critique in the language you have indicated on the contact form, where you will be able to choose from English, Spanish or French.

What if I have any queries or something is not clear to me?
To resolve any questions or doubts you may have after having watched the video, we include a Skype session of 30 minutes with our portfolio review package. It provides a great opportunity to discuss your work one to one with Rafael Rojas.

Can I send my photographs if they are in black and white or scanned from film?
Yes. In fact, much of Rafael Rojas' work has been done in film and in black and white too. Colour, black and white, film, digital...it is all the same. It is not the medium which matters, but what you do with it.

Can I send you my original images for the post-processing ?
Yes, you could, but it would be a pity since post-processing is part of the creative process of the photographer, and very much related to the personal expression we want to see through your work. Basically, your photographs are only totally yours when you have also taken care of the post-processing. We will in any case tackle post-processing during the portfolio review, and also give you advice about how to improve it, by means of Adobe Lightroom or Photoshop.

Can I send you more than 10 images?
Making a selection of your best work or that which best represents you is already a challenging task. You will be forced to analyze your photographs in advance, and that will place you in an excellent position for later receiving the review. Therefore, 10 photographs should be more than enough to represent where your work stands at the moment.
